Abstract

This thesis aimed to understand mothering experiences of Filipina domestic workers and their female employers in Hong Kong and how they are transformed by the globalization and international migration. The qualitative research adopted feminist methods and feminist standpoint epistemology which takes woman's experience as the starting point for knowledge production. In-depth interviews and focus group meetings were carried out with Filipina domestic workers and female employers. The main argument of the research states that; there is no single and absolute mothering experience and women's mothering experiences change according to their class and ethnic status. It also argues that mothering experiences of Filipina domestic workers are shaped by the 'transnational mothering ideology' whereas mothering experiences of female employers are shaped by the 'intensive mothering ideology'. According to the findings of the research, Filipina domestic workers and female employers defined 'good mothering' differently according to their class, ethnicity and migration experiences. However, their mothering experiences and 'good mothering' ideals converged at providing good education to their children. The mothering experiences of Filipina domestic workers are transformed by migration, living away from their children, importance of their children's education and the migration policies of Hong Kong and it is observed that they constructed distance mothering strategies. The mothering experiences of middle- and upper-class women are transformed by the competitive child rearing practices in Hong Kong, importance that they give to their children's education and the support they received from their helpers. It is observed that they reached the ideals of intensive mothering ideology by the support of their helpers. This research also argued that Filipina domestic workers who practice distance mothering produce 'affect labour' while taking care of their employer's children.
