| dc.description.abstract | THE ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF CHIVALRIC IDEAL IN THE WORKS ENTITLED LE MORTE D?ARTHUR BY SIR THOMAS MALORY AND IDYLLS OF THE KING BY ALFRED LORD TENNYSONAs a Medieval institution knighthood takes its origin from religious, moral and social codes which dominated the minds ofthe aristocracy and nobility in the Middle Ages. This dissertation probes, first, the origins of ?knight? in the historical and socialcontext. The idea of chivalry from the beginning, the primitive root of the warrior German tribes to full armoured late Medievalknight has been changed through the shifting social and cultural forces.The legendary King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table set an example of the chivalric ideal as splendid aspossible. Malory examines the question of why chivalry did not bring happiness and stability to Camelot. He also shows somefundamental truths about the nature of humanity. Le Morte D?Arthur compels a man to fallow an active life dedicated to theservice of others. Malory believes that the code of chivalry is very simple; fighting is at the centre and knightly mannerscomplete the whole.Tennyson?s Camelot has a darker vision. He deals with the tales of King Arthur and the Round Table to reflect thecontemporary issues caused by the social changes brought about by the advent of industrial capitalism. His ideal is mostlydisillusioned by sexual sin and to some extent broken promises of the oath of knighthood. As a Victorian moralist, Tennyson?soutlook is strict, he holds women and men of Camelot responsible for bringing destruction to the Round Table and the virtuesit represents despite Arthur?s own purity in soul. | en_EN |
