Abstract

The purpose of this study was examine effects of mindfulness based physical education lessons on primary 3rd and 4th grade students' mindfulness, emotional and psychological well being levels. The study group of this research consisted of 30 students (15 students in the experimental group and 15 students in control group) who are studying in the 3rd and 4th grades of an primary school in Niğde in 2020-2021 fall semester. The research is an experimental study using the pretest-post-test model with control group. The mindfulness-based education program designed by the researcher used in physical education lessons was applied to the experimental group for 8 weeks. In this study BAU mindfulness Scale for Children and Stirling Emotional and psychological well-being scale for children were used as data collection instruments. Quantitative data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze whether there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test was used to observe whether there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group. As a result, it was determined that 8 week mindfulness based physical education lessons have not a significant effect on mindfulness, emotional and psychological well-being of primary school 3rd and 4th grade students. Post-test mean scores of the experimental group students on the BAU mindfulness scale for children attitude sub-dimension (x̄ = 24,40), post-test mean scores for the awareness sub-dimension (x̄ = 19,33), The post-test mean scores they got from the Stirling children's emotional and psychological well-being scale were found to be (x̄ = 51.27).
