Abstract
Sovereignty is a concept that has been debated for ages in different dimensions. The underlying question here is based on the issue, 'to whom sovereignty belongs'. In Islamic culture it is doubtless that Creative-Existent Sovereignty belongs to Allah. The central issue here is whether God has endowed man with sovereignty or not.Man, so as to be regarded as responsible being, has to have sovereignty. Otherwise, the concepts, 'responsibility' and 'accountability' would mean nothing. God created each individual as sovereign and demanded that he should practise his sovereignty rightly. Offering solutions to man, God has guided and led mankind. Man's responsibility is that he should be conscious of his role that God has designated man as sovereign on earth, thereby producing goods and offering services in the best way. This study aims at putting forward that man is the sheer political sovereignty on earth. In the introductory part, the various meanings of the concept is dealt with in detail. In the first part, the approaches to the realm of sovereignty within the framework of God-man-universe have been examined. The founding components of individual sovereignty, which are freedom, free-will, omnipotence, and responsibility, have all been dealt with such issues as individual, individuality and uniqueness of man, accordingly. In the second part of the study, social sovereignty has been focused upon. In this part, as well as politics and political power, superiority of law, hilafet and vekalet (ultimate power of God on earth and its distribution and implementation by man, His shadow on earth), phenomenon of tradition and weakening impacts of tradition over the sovereignty of an individual. Finally, the principle of secularism and its influence directed towards the realisation of individual sovereignty have been dwelt upon.
