Köklü, Arzu, ?The Picture in Christianity and Islam?, Master?s Thesis, Advisor:Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hikmet Eroğlu, VI+162 p.ABSTRACTThis master thesis is about painting at Islam and Christianity. The study hasbeen restricted with the paintings that have religious content. Such kind of paintingshas both historical and religious importance especially in Christianity. Christianshave the paintings of Jesus Christ, Holly Mary, and saints at their homes andchurches. Such paintings are called as icons. They have a different importance forOrthodoxies and Catholics. Icons have a great function at both religious education,praying. Some Christians believe in miraculous features of themIn time some people gave faith to icons too much and some Christians reactedthem. This contradiction caused a chaos in Byzantine. The period of iconoclasm,started Leon 3 continued almost a century and icon lovers got the victory in the end.In Islam icons and such kind of paintings do not exist. Some scholars claimedthat paintings should be banned comments some words of Prophet Mohammed(Peace be upon him) However, There are no comments about prohibition of paintingin the Holly Book, Qur?an. Islam has banned the idols that is used to worship Sincethe early Islam, Muslims have used painted things. The art of miniature havedeveloped. Some miniature pictures of the Prophet have been drawn. But they havenever been put in the mosques and have never been used to worship.
