Abstract
The aim of the study is to determine whether there are differences between the trait anxiety, the examination anxiety, the social skill levels and examination performance of the 8th grade students at the primary school and 12th grade students at the secondary school attending the SBS and YGS private courses regularly according to the variable of physical activity participation.The sample of this study, conducted through the scanning model, totally consists of 1319 randomly-selected private teaching center's students from 31 provinces, 736 of whom participate in physical activities and 583 of whom do not participate in physical activities, as well as 665 of them are 8th graders and 654 of them are 12th graders.Research data is collected by the form developed to collect personal information by the researcher, a 20-item trait anxiety sub-scale of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger and colleagues(1970) to determine the participants? levels of trait anxiety and translated into Turkish by Oner and Le Compte (1982) ,the examination anxiety scale published in the official site of the Ministry of Education in order to measure examination anxiety and used as a measure of assessment in all private teaching centers, the Social Skills Inventory developed by Riggio(1986) and adapted into Turkish by Yüksel (1998) .SPSS package program was used to analyze the data and the statistical significance level was adopted as the alpha value was 0.05.As a result, the trait and examination anxiety of the female students is higher according to the gender variable. It was found that female students have higher levels of social skills.It was determined that students' not being able to spare time for free time activities was largely due to the lack of time. The majority of the research group is not able to overcome the negative effects of studying for an exam process. In parallel to this result, exam result is an important factor for the majority of students in terms of establishing and proving themselves.YGS group students are significantly more concerned in terms of the trait anxiety level; SBS group students are significantly more concerned in terms of the examination anxiety.It was determined that the trait and examination anxiety levels of the students involved in physical activities are significantly lower while the social skill levels are significantly higher.The comparison of the SBS performance according to the physical activity participation did not differ significantly. However, the performance of YGS was found to be significantly higher in favor of the students who do not participate in physical activity.Social skill levels of those participating in recreational activities are higher, and the trait anxiety and the examination anxiety levels are lower with respect to those who do not participate in physical activities. Although there is no significant difference according to the exam performance, it was determined that those who participate in recreational activities have higher exam point average.
