Abstract
In order to enable students to use language in their daily life more effectively and intelligibly, to get familiarized with the possibilities that language offers, and to better comprehend written texts and to extract the messages conveyed in these texts more effectively, rhetoric is offered in languages and literature education. To be able to teach rhetoric effectively and productively, or in other words, to develop students' skills of understanding and expression, it is both important and necessary to receive feedback from the students about the serviceability of teaching. The general purpose of this study is to elicit the views of students about the quality and serviceability of the teaching of rhetoric in educational environments. This study is a qualitative research, which use a case study method. In order to elicit the views of the secondary school students who had the experience of how rhetoric was taught in Turkish Language and Literature course environments, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The study group of the research consisted of 20 students who volunteered for this study during the 2017-2018 academic year and who attended a private school in the city of Ankara, which ran under the Turkish Ministry of Education. The data was gathered from the responses given to the interview questions. While the collected data was analyzed by using "content analysis," the Turkish Language and Literature programs and their schoolbooks were analyzed with the "document review method." The outcome of the research was that the students did not find the explanations, activities and examples in the textbooks about the teaching of rhetoric sufficient. It was also seen that the students internalized the rhetoric that they used in their everyday life more than the others and they found the rhetoric available in the textbooks easier.
