Abstract
The incidence of cancer is still increasing. Although there are different treatment modalities in cancer treatment, the disease needs to be eradicated effectively. Recently, anti-angiogenesis treatment strategies have gained great importance. The effects of conventional chemotherapy drugs on angiogenesis are not known. In this study we aimed to investigate the effects of conventional chemotherapy drugs on VEGF secretion. For this purpose, some chemotherapy drugs?s effect on cytotoxic VEGF levels was investigated on colon, breast and stomach cell lines in vitro and the effects of conventional chemotherapy on VEGF levels on colon, breast and stomach cancer patients. VEGF in patient?s serum was evaluated by ELISA method. In vitro cytotoxic experiments was evaluated with MTT cell proliferation assay and confirmed with trypan blue viability assay. As a result, along with its cytotoxic effects, the chemotherapy could decrease the serum VEGF levels. Irinotecan seems to decrease the serum VEGF level independent of its cytotoxic effect. We found that the cehmotherapeutic drugs decreased the VEGF secretion at the lower doses. If we think about angiogenesis on course of disease, especially the relationship between metastases, decreasing VEGF levels with chemotherapeutics could be important in cancer treatment.
