ABSTRACT Ph.D. Thesis OIL AGGLOMERATION OF COAL AND BENEFICIATION OF EXTRACTION CHAR İlkay ÜNAL Ankara University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Chemical Engineer Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Aral OLCAY 1999, Page : 120 Jury : Prof. Dr. Yuda YÜRÜM Prof. Dr. Taner TO?RUL Prof. Dr. Ali BİLGESÜ Assoc.Prof.Dr.Zeki AKTAŞ Oil agglomeration of Zonguldak bituminous coal and Manisa Soma Sankaya and Manisa Soma Elmalı lignites with high ash contents were studied. Heavy media separations of the same coals were also performed and the results were compared with those obtained from oil agglomeration. Soxhlet extraction of Zonguldak bituminous coal and supercritical gas extraction of Manisa Soma Sankaya and Manisa Soma Elmalı lignites were conducted. The extract fractions obtained from both Soxhlet and supercritical gas extraction were used as bridging oil in various proportions of the total oil and chars as feeding solids were used to improve their grade as well. It was found that kerosine, diesel oil and Kirkuk crude oil were good bridging oils for Zonguldak bituminous coal. It was suggested that the amount of bridging oil is crucial parameter for oil agglomeration depending on the type of coal. Over 90% of recovery was obtained from agglomeration of Manisa Soma Sankaya lignite using large amount of the crude oil. The extraction char of Zonguldak bituminous coal and the lignites were agglomerated however their grades were not improved practically. The oil and asphaltene fractions of the extract of Zonguldak bituminous coal in the bridging oil decreased the grade of the final product. The oil fractions of extract obtained from supercritical gas extraction of Manisa Soma Sankaya lignite increased the recovery of the agglomerate. The grades of the agglomerates were slighty improved using Triton X-100 which is perfect dispersant for the coals, however the recoveries decreased. It may be concluded that excess amounts of Triton X-100 in the suspension could change the surface properties of solids particles. Key Words : Coal, agglomeration, separation, extraction. 11
