Abstract

The aim of the research is to evaluate the effectiveness of academicprocrastination behavior preventation program, based on rational emotivebehavioral approach, on the academic procrastination, time management andcognitive distortion of university students.The research is an experimental study which has experiment andcontrol groups, and based on pre-test, post-test and follow-up model.Research group consists of second or third grade students of Primary SchoolEducation, Social Studies Education, Department of Preschool education,Computer Education and Instructional Technologies, Religious Culture andKnowledge of Morality and Special Education Department Program of MentalReterdation undergraduate programmes other departments in AnkaraUniversity Faculty of Educational Sciences. The research group was formedby the students whose academic procrastination tendency is high, by usingacademic procrastination scale. 134 students, whose academicprocrastination tendencies are high, were determined. 34 students, volunter toparticipating into the study, were appointed randomly to the experiment andcontrol groups. Academic procrastination, cognitive distortion and timemanagement scale were used to collect the data. Scales were given toexperiment and control groups as a pre-test. To the experiment groupacademic procrastination program based on Rational Emotive BehavioralApproach, developed by the researcher, was applied. Control group was notgiven any training. After the training the of experiment group, post-testmeasurements were taken. And also 45 days after the experimental training,follow-up measurements were taken.Data were analyzed using Analyzis of Variance for repeated measures.In the result of the applied program, a significant difference was found in favorof experiment group in academic procrastination, cognitive distortion and timemanagement skills. The results were interpreted in the light of the literatureconsidering effects of Rational Emotive Behavioral Approach on academicprocrastination, cognitive distortion, and time management.
