Abstract

The Effect and Clinical Importance of Diarrhea to Cortisol Secretion in Neonatal Calves In this study a total of 30 calves were used. First group consisted of totally 14 animals that were apparently healthy 7 female and 7 male calves. Second group consisted of 8 female and 8 male diarrheic calves that were presented to our clinics. The calves in the second group were evaluated before therapy (BT) and after therapy (AT). In healthy and sick calves blood WBC, RBC, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCH, blood glucose level, creatinin, total protein, albumin, globulin, A/G, Na, K, CI and basal Cortisol levels were detected and clinical importance were evaluated by detecting the changes caused by diarrhea. For the first blood samples that were taken from the diarrhoeic calves presented to the clinic; WBC (12,84 103/mm3), RBC (7,86 106/mm3), Hb (10,26 g/dl), Hct (%36,42), glucose (82,44 mg/dl), BUN (39,50 mg/dl), creatinin (2,21 mg/dl), total protein (6,08 g/dl) and K (5,26 mEq/dL) values were founded as increased MCH (15,05 pg), CI (92,62 mEq/dl) values were found as decreased and MCV (44,67 fL), and Na (140,87 mEq/dl) values were found to be doused with in the physiological ranges. Mean plasma Cortisol level in the diarrhoeic calves (1,69 ng/dl) was found as significantly high with respect to healthy consisting the calves in the control group (0,09 Mg/dl). Within ttie end of medical terapy, consisting intravenous sodium bicarbonate and isotonic sodium chloride solutions and per oral fluid terapy according to the clinical signs and dehihydration degrees of the diarrhoeic calves, blood levels mostly reaced to the physiolgical ranges. After terapy Cortisol concerfration in recovered51 calves (0,54±0,09 yg/dl) was found to be increased in respect to the calves that never devoloped illness (0#09±0,02 fig/dl). As a result it was suggested that some systemic and metabolic changes might be developed as a ersult of disordered hemoconcentration and homeostasis induced by diarrhoea, because of high Cortisol concentration in calves have positive effects on metabolic conditions of the organism such as Ig absorbtion and keeping glucose in high concentrations besides have immunosupressive effects after terapy recovering manegement conditions within reducing of the stress factors could be necesarry. Clinical signs and dehydration degrees were detected so that blood levels were reached to the physiological levels as a result of parenteral and oral fluid therapy with and medical therapy.
