Abstract

Time is indispensible part of life, therefore, time-concept has from the earliest period of the settlement on the earth preoccupied the mankind. In order to regulate the daily affairs and to determine the time of saw and harvest human being divided the into certain parts such as day, week, mounth and year. For example, the earliest inhabitant of Egypt calculated the annual agricultural activities according to the flow of the Nile. People in the other parts of the world have taken similar natural courses to define the time. Although we do not know how the first Turkish tribes defined the time, we have certain clues that proves the existence of the time-concept. Besides the national calendar, the earliest Turkish tribes made use of the calenders of the other nations and tribes with whom they had a relation. In our thesis we analysed different time-concepts used by Turks. We tried to explain how they named the different time-concepts such as day, week, mounth and year through analysing the old Turkish script. We analysed the words in terms of their lexical and etymological meaning. We added the index of the words we studied at the and of our study.
