Abstract

This study, in which national press news about European Union relations has been examined, tries to find out how and in what ways the representation of European Union membership in Turkey transformed during the European Union Summits in 2004 and 2006. The principle that meanings, values and representations of `things? change over time due to the existence of various contexts, and thus, that different roles and forms may be attributed to them accordingly, is the major methodological premise of this study. In the first part, the main aim is to reveal what is meant by the word `consensus?, which then enables to include some different approaches of liberal and critical minded theorists to news, and to add some comments on the idea of `consent?. By touching upon the issues of representation, language and meaning, and the problematic of reality, the intention in the following part has been to explain why representation is usually open to change.Going through a detailed analysis of the developments observed during the Summits of 2004 and 2006, it is the main object in the last part to pursue the basic points of change visible in the representation, especially during the years of these European Union Summits
