Abstract

This research investigates descriptively and comparatively the understanding of Holy Book in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This study consists of Introduction, Four Chapters and Conclusion. The Introduction gives some information about the methodology of the study and it explains the concepts of "book", "holiness" and "holy book". In addition to this it deals with the holy books of other religions than Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The First Chapter studies the understanding of holy book in Judaism. And it investigates the inspiration of the Old Testament, its collection, its writing and its content. Furthermore this chapter examines the place of the Old Testament in the life of Jews, its importance and its interpretation. It besides expounds the views of various Jewish sects regarding the Old Testament. The Second Chapter researchs the understanding of holy book in Christianity. In this context it deals with the inspiration of the New Testament, its collection, its writing, its content and the views of Christians to the Bible. This chapter also investigates the place of the New Testament in religious life of Christians, its reception, its interpretation and the understanding of holy book in various Christian sects. The Third Chapter examines the understanding of holy book in Islam. In this context it studies the descent of the Quran, its collection and its writing. Furthermore this chapter explains the perceiving of the Quran in Islam. In addition to this, it deals with the views of various Islamic sects about the matter in general. The Fourth Chapter exposes the Quranic view of Jewish and Christian holy books. The Conclusion appreciates the consequences of this study.
