Abstract
Wheat is commonly planted in Turkey. Rust diseases are among the most important biotic factors affecting wheat yield and quality. Stem rust of wheat caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici is one of the oldest known diseases of wheat. Wheat stem rust is common in Kastamonu province of Turkey. In addition, Berberis vulgaris which is the most common species in Turkey and other Berberis species are common in northern part of Anatolia. In this study which is conducted in 2016 and 2017 in Kastamonu province stem rust races occurring on Berberis species and wheat plants were determined. Berberis species are common in Kastamonu province. The rust infection status of Berberis species and effect of Berberis species on pathogenic variation of stem rust were investigated. Forty single pustule aeciospores from Berberis plants were obtained. From Berberis plants the most common stem rust race was TTTTF. Other stem rust races from Berberis plants were RTTTF, RTTTC, TTTTC and TTKTF. From wheat plants 74 single pustule isolates of stem rust were obtained. In Kastamonu province the most common stem rust race in wheat plants were TTTTF. Other stem rust races from wheat plants were TTKTF, TTTTC, TTKTC, RTTTF and RTTTC. Under greenhouse conditions, seedling response of 46 bread wheat and 14 durum wheat cultivars commonly grown in Turkey to stem rust races TTTTF, RTTTC and RTTTF were determined. Susceptible and resistant cultivars to these races were found. Also cultivars showing different reactions to these races were present.
