Abstract
In this study, the establishment, expansion and closing adventure of the People's Houses in the period when it operated between 1932-1951 are discussed. Houses originally emerged within an organization based on the principles of Republican People's Party's Republicanism, Nationalism, Populism, Statism, Secularism and Revolutionism. People's Houses, which are based on the aim of adopting the national culture to the citizens and aiming the social, cultural and political development of the Turkish nation. It was established in 1932. It focuses on many areas such as culture, education, fine arts, folklore and sports. The activities of houses regarding the protection and improvement of public health constitute the main subject of this study. After the People's Houses started to operate in 1932, the CHP brought organizations named People's Rooms to the country as small examples of People's Houses in the 1940s. Thus, these organizations, which had the opportunity to open up to the provinces, spread to all parts of the country with different branches. In the People's Houses in addition to Literature, History, Fine Arts, Representation, Sports, Public Courses and Courses, Library and Publications, Villagers, History and Exhibition Branches, there is also Social Assistance Branch; activities related to the development of public health were carried out under this branch. In this study, health policies before and after the Republic were primarily discussed. Then, the period from the opening of the People's Houses to its closing was given chronologically. The activities of the Houses for the protection of public health have been evaluated within the framework of the Social Aid Branch, where health-related activities are carried out. In addition to the main health care activities such as opening clinics, hospitals, hospice, dispensary, child maternity-nursing homes, nursery and treatment dormitories run by the branch, it also contributes to the development of health through collective events, conferences and media. Considering the spread of the activities across the country in terms of branches and activities and the number of citizens benefiting from health services, it will be seen how serious work People's Houses do for protecting public health.
