Abstract
In this thesis, process of the transition from modernism to postmodernism in the Turkish novel has been investigated. In the introduction, the conceptual framework of the modernism and postmodernism has been constructed. In the first part, by focusing on the historical development of modernism and postmodernism, acknowledging the prominent views on modernism and postmodernism, it is aimed to illustrate the status quo of and the nature of the perception of themodernism and postmodernism. Later, reflection of modernism and postmodernism in art has been discussed. In this respect, influence of modernism and postmodernism at the literature has been explained. After the general perspective on literature, the novel that has been transformed with the impact of modernism and postmodernism, has been demonstrated by the use of representatives of the field in the world. It has been focused on the innovations that brought by the modernist novelists, characteristic attributes of the novels that has been transformed from modern to postmodern, and on the leading figures in the postmodern novel. In the first part, after a general discussion of social and artistic expressions of modernism and postmodernism in world, in the second part Turkey is taken into the spotlight. Firstly, stages of turkish modernism is examined. After perception of modernism and postmodernism by the society has been examined, stages of modernisation and postmodernisation of Turkish literature has been discussed. It has been shown that society and literature, at the same time experience the modernisation and postmodernisation. The period between emergence of Turkish novel and interaction with modernism and postmodernism has been evaluated in general. Then, the opinions in the Turkey out of the Turkey, on increasing influence of modernism and postmodernism on Turkish literature, has been indicated. After the descriptive information about the Turkish novel, in the last part novels that exhibit the typical marks of modernism and postmodernism has been examined. In this part, to highlight the appearance of modernism and postmodernism in novel, formation of time, linguistic and stylistic elements, fictional structure, and plot are examined. Then, use of intertextuality, irony, and metafiction; impact of reader-centered approach and pluralism are addressed. In this context, the use of the elements of novel has been established. The nature of transition from modernism to postmodernism in the Turkish novel is examined by investigating the elements based on the conclusion arrived.
