Abstract

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF SOME SCHIFF BASESAysun AYDINLI ESENAnkara UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied ScienceDepartment of BiologySupervisor: Prof.Dr. Cumhur ÇÖKMÜŞIn this study, the antibacterial activities of 18 newly synthesized Schiff bases examinedon the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, EnterococcusBacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa by diskgallinarum, Esherichia coli, diffusion method. The 6 of 18 Schiff bases, which contain sulfur, ((1-{[(2-mercaptophenyl) imino]methyl}-2-naphtol (SB1), 2-{[(2-mercaptophenyl) imino] methyl] phenol (SB2), 2-[(E)-(4,5-dihydro-1,3-thiazol-2-ylimino) methyl] phenol (SB3), 2-[(1,3-benzothiazol-2-ylimino)methyl] phenol (SB4), 4-chloro-2-[(1,3-thiazol-2-ylimino)mehyl] phenol(SB5), 2-[(1,3-benzothiazol-2-ylimino) methyl]-4-chlorophenyl SB6)) showedantibacterial activity against the bacteria given above. It was determined that the Schiffbase 2-{[(2-mercaptophenyl) imino] methyl] phenol (SH2) showed the highestantibacterial activity against bacteria except E. faecalis.2006, 45 pagesKey Words : Antimicrobial activity, Schiff basesii
