    A Rare Tumor of The Oral Mucosa, Myopericytoma: Case Report

    Myopericytoma (MPC) is defined as a benign mesenchymal neoplasm consisting mostly of oval spindle-shaped myoid-like cells with perivascular growth. Apart from being a rare lesion in all anatomical regions of the body, it is extremely rare in the oral and maxillofacial region and only a limited number of cases have been reported in the literature. We present here the case of MPC in a 42-year-old female patient who had a painless, enlarging lesion in the anterior mandible. Intraoral examination of the lesion revealed a smooth, nonwhite, pedunculated, fibrotic, painless, and nonbleeding lesion in the lingual aspect of the anterior mandible. Histopathologic examination revealed a tumor consisting of spherical/nodular structures composed of spindle cells and hemangioperistomatous vascular structures in the form of staghorn. These tumor cells showed no signs of malignancy. On immunohistochemical examination, the tumor cells were positive for CD34 and SMA. SMA Protein was also focally positive in nodular structures formed by spindle cells and tumor stroma. S-100 protein was negative in the lesion. To our knowledge, this is the second case of MPC that occurred in the mandibular gingiva.

    Effects of Surface Preparation with Sodium Hypochlorite on Shear Bond Strength and Residual Adhesive of Orthodontic Brackets on Primary and Permanent Teeth

    Objective: To investigate the effects of surface preparation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on bracket shear bond strength and amount of residual adhesive on primary and permanent teeth. Materials and Methods: 24 permanent premolars, 12 in each group (groups I and III), and 24 primary molars, 12 in each group (groups II and IV) were included. In group I and II, 37% phosphoric acid was applied to the tooth surfaces, without using any other agent. In Group III and IV, 5.25% NaOCl was first applied. Following washing and drying, surface roughening was performed with phosphoric acid. The shear bond strengths (SBS) of the brackets bonded to the tooth surfaces was measured. After debonding, the base of each bracket was examined for adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in SBS values between primary and permanent teeth with and without preparation with NaOCl(P>0.05). Mean SBS(18.55±14.98 MPa) was higher in permanent premolars subjected to surface deproteinization with NaOCl (group III) when compared with other groups, but the difference was not significant. There was no significant difference in ARI scores between the groups. Conclusions: The bond strength of orthodontic brackets or the distribution of ARI scores were similar between groups with and without NaOCl pretreatment. Hence, it can be concluded that conventional bonding procedures applied without any additional preparation to primary teeth are sufficient and the debonding of brackets didn’t cause any harm to enamel surfaces.

    In-Vitro Bond Strength of a Flowable Compomer to Primary Teeth Dentin with Different Applying Techniques

    Purpose: The study aimed to investigate the effect of applying flowable compomer using different techniques and long-term water storage on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to primary teeth dentin and present a comparison with packable compomer. Materials and methods: 90 primary molars were used to evaluate the µTBS of the materials. Specimens were randomly divided into 3 main groups for restoration: Group 1 and 4, compomer (Glasiosite, VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) filling alone; Group 2 and 5, flowable compomer (Twinky Star Flow, VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) lining/pre-cured and overlaying compomer; and Group 3 and 6, flowable compomer lining/co-cured with overlaying compomer. All specimens were thermocycled (500X), after which half of them (n=45) were stored in distilled water for 24 h (Group A: Groups 1-3), and the remaining half (n=45) for 24 months (Group B: Groups 4-6). Samples were tested for µTBS (1 mm/min) with a microtensile testing machine (T 61010 Ki, Bisco, Schaumburg, USA). Failure modes were determined with the aid of a stereomicroscope. Results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis H test. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding bond strength (p>0.05). Mixed cohesive failure of both adhesive and dentin was the most common type of failure in all groups (p<0.05). 2-year water storage significantly decreased the bond strength for all groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Flowable compomers applied using different techniques produced similar bond strength to dentin compared to compomer. However, long-term water storage decreased bond strength significantly.

    Benign and Malignant Neoplasms Affecting Periodontal Tissues: A Retrospective Study

    Introduction: Oral neoplasms are the second most common oral lesions after reactive proliferative lesions. The aim of this study is to determine the distribution of the oral neoplasms by gender and age, and briefly discussed the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatments of these lesions. Materials and Methods: To collect the study material, a pathological retrospective archive analysis has been performed and 61 oral neoplasm cases were determined in a total of 423 samples. 61 biopsies and clinical data of patients were studied and classified based on their histopathologic diagnosis, age, gender, and frequency. Results: In our study, a total of 61 neoplastic lesions were examined, and the mean age was 45.5 ±18.2. The most common lesion in the oral neoplastic lesion is leukoplakia (n=15, 24.59%). This is followed by squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n =13, 21.31%) and squamous papilloma (n =11, 18.03%). The rest are gingival granular cell tumor, hemangioma, odontoma, lipoma, mucosal nevus, myxoma, ameloblastoma, leukemia, melanoma, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma. Conclusion: This study provided important data on the frequency and histological distribution of oral benign and malign neoplasms. This study also highlights the diagnosis, and management of these oral neoplasms for the dentists.

    Evaluation of Repairability of Different Resin Composites After ph and Thermal Cycling

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different aging methods on repair bond strength of different types of composite resins. Materials and Methods: Thirty resin composite blocks (5mm×5mm×4mm) were built up with a nanohybrid universal resin composite and a bulk-fill resin composite according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using a silicone matrix. Indirect resin composite blocks were obtained with similar dimensions from prefabricated blocks by microtome. All the samples were air abraded with 50µm aluminum oxide particles. Specimens were then repaired with a nanohybrid resin composite using two step adhesive system. All these specimens were then randomly divided into three groups for aging process (pH cycle, thermal cycle and control group) and tested for shear bond strength. Results were recorded in MPa. Additionally fractured specimens were examined under stereomicroscope to determine the mode of failure. The data was statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction test (p<0,05). Results: Statistically significant effect was found on the bond strength values of the aging method and the restorative material (p<0,05). Thermal cycle applied samples showed statistically significantly lower bond strength values than both pH cycle and control group samples (p<0,05). Regardless of the aging method, the overall bond strength of Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill is statistically significantly higher than bond strength of Tetric CAD (p<0,05). Conclusions: Thermal cycle application is an effective aging method and air abrasion has different effects on repair bond strength of the restorative materials according to the content of the materials.

    Comparison of Surgery-Related Knowledge Levels Between Patient Groups with and without Experience of Impacted Tooth Extraction

    Purpose: Comparison of the knowledge levels of patients in different demographic groups with and without impacted third molar experience. The authors' expectation was that experienced patients would have a higher level of knowledge. Materials and Methods: Sixty-five patients (34 experienced, 31 inexperienced) with impacted third molar extraction indication were included in the study. A questionnaire with 23 questions concerning different operative phases and where the patients could write down their own questions were administered before surgeries. Demographic data (gender, age group and educational status) were also noted. Results: Questionnaire success did not show a significant difference in different demographic groups and between patients with and without experience of third molar tooth extraction (p>0.05). Conclusion: Dental surgeons should do their best to provide written and verbal information before surgical procedures, each patient should be evaluated as a first-time patient, regardless of demographic data and past experiences. It should not be neglected to provide a detailed information process.

    Comparison of Stain Effects of Nicotine and Beverages on Different Cad-Cam Materials

    Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effect of smoking cigarettes and drinking beverages and also polishing procedures on the discoloration of CAD/CAM materials. Materials and Methods: Resin nanoceramic (Lava Ultimate-RN), feldspar ceramic (CEREC Blocs Ceramics-FC) and lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max® CAD-LDC) specimens (5X5 X2 mm) were used for this study. Initially, baseline surface roughness (Ra) and color values (L*, a*, b*) of the specimens were measured with profilometer and chroma meter. Then the specimens were exposure nicotine, coffee and red wine. The first discoloration values of each specimen were measured. Then, all of the specimens were subjected to re-polishing procedures. Than, the surface roughness and color values of each specimen were measured. The specimens were subjected to the same staining process again. After exposure of the specimens to the staining agents, the second staining value was measured. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for normally distributed groups, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used for non-normally distributed groups. Results: Statistically significant ΔE* values were observed for RN (8.26±1.55) and FC (7.69±1.52) for nicotine in the first staining group. The maximum total color changes were observed in the nicotine group for all of the material specimens. Nicotine caused the highest color changes on the test materials than coffee and wine. Surface roughness did not show a statistically significant difference based on the staining agents for any of the materials within a group (p<0.05). Conclusions: It was observed that nicotine staining is far stronger than beverage staining.

    A Survey Study on Sleep Breathing in Individuals with Malocclusion Characterized by Maxillary Transversal Deficiency and Snoring Problem

    Aim: The aim of this survey study is to evaluate the awareness of parents on sleep disorders and their side effects, and to measure their level of awareness to those respiratory problems can lead to dental and jaw disorders. Materials and Methods: A survey was applied to the parents of 30 children whose average age was 11.86, who had snoring, mouth breathing, and narrow maxilla, who applied to the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Ankara University. While the first six questions of the questionnaire are about general information, the next 37 questions are about the smoking status of the parents, the child's snoring characteristics, and apnea, day and night complaints that are typically seen in children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Result: In our survey study, it was determined that the awareness of people that snoring in children can be a symptom of a disease is weak. 40% of parents do not have information on this issue. In addition to that, parents do not think that snoring seen in children while sleeping at night may influence school success. Conclusion: In our study, it was found that the level of awareness of parents about the effects of breathing problems during sleep on jaw development was also low. Because of that, orthodontists and physicians interested in sleep should inform the society more about this issue.
