Aşokāvadāna'da Buddhist kültürün izleri ve tarihi
(Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2020) Hakman, Ilgaz; Kayalı, Yalçın; Other
The Maurya Emperor Ashoka, one of the most important advocates and patrons of Buddhism in Indian history, is a worldwide known great ruler. The main reason for this was the Buddhist teachings and compassionate policies he adopted, as well as the major role he played in the spread of Buddhism to China, Central Asia, Japan and Korea. For the same reasons, there are many Buddhist narratives about the life of Ashoka, which has an important role inside Buddhist culture. As part of our thesis the place of Aşokākavadāna, which is one of the most famous of these narratives and takes it's name from Aşoka in Avadāna Literature, in Buddhist culture and history has been tried to be conveyed by examining the narratives about the life of Emperor Ashoka. The narratives in the work include topics such as the life of Ashoka, the life and teachings of Buddha, and Buddhist history. In the first part, in order to understand the traces of the life of Ashoka more clearly, the history of the Maurya Empire he ruled and the life of Ashoka as a historical personality were discussed. In the second part, information about the life of Buddha, the history of Buddhism and Buddhist Literature was given and the place of the source text in the Buddhist culture was tried to be determined. Finally, in the third part, the various narratives in our source text, Aşokākavadāna, were translated into our language and the information transferred in the previous chapters; it has been synthesized and transferred with the knowledge of Indology science and culture.
