    Biocompatibility evaluation of resin-based restorative materials: a review

    Biocompatibility is described as an appropriate biological response of a biomaterial in a living organism. It is known that biomaterials are not inert and the materials should be tested before they are allowed to be used in clinical practice. Various test methods have been developed and protocols have been determined for this purpose. Resin-based restorative materials are extensively used in dentistry due to the increased aesthetic demands of patients and the ease of use in clinical practice. As the restorative materials function in the mouth for long years, concerns regarding the biocompatibility of resin-based restorative materials become more important. Regarding the importance of this issue, the purpose of this review is to evaluate the local and systemic potential toxicity of resin-based restorative materials, toxicity test methods, and the mechanism of the cytotoxicity in living tissues.

    Management of emergency cases in endodontics practice during the covid-19 pandemic: a literature review

    The aim of this review is to evaluate emergencies and treatment approaches encountered in the endodontics clinic during the Covid-19 epidemic process. For this study, articles on dentistry related to Covid-19 in PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched. Clinicians should know the infection transmission routes and prevention methods well. In this duration, it is substantial to distinguish which case is urgent and to complete the necessary treatment in a short time. This paper presents useful suggestions for dental emergency practice.

    Rehabilitation of a severely worn dentition with partial lithium-disilicate glass ceramic restorations: a case report

    Rehabilitation of worn dentition is a challenging task because several predisposing factors may be included in the pathogenesis. The treatment options and process should be carefully considered based on the clinical condition and patients’ requirements. This case report represents the esthetic rehabilitation of a 68-year-old patient who exhibited severely worn teeth caused by attrition and erosion. After clinical evaluation, 3 mm increase in occlusal vertical dimension was planned with partial lithium-disilicate ceramic restorations as laminate veneers for anterior teeth and vonlays (onlays with veneer extentions) for posterior teeth in maxilla. The adaptation of the patient to the increased occlusal vertical dimension was tested for 1 month by provisional direct composite restorations. As the patient did not show any discomfort, definitive restorations were completed. The patient was satisfied with the esthetics and functionality of her new dentition.

    The effects of coffee and energy drink on color stability of hybrid ceramics

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the color stability of two different hybrid ceramic materials. Materials & Methods: Using the precision cutting device (Micracut, Metcon, Turkey), 36 specimens (12 x 15 x 1 mm) were obtained from Vita Enamic (Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany) and Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE, St.Paul, USA) CAD / CAM blocks. After finishing procedures were completed, all specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 h. Then, the specimens were dried and the initial color measurements were made. L, a, b values were determined using a spectrophotometer (Vita Easy Shade, Vita Zahnfabrik, Germany). The specimens were then divided into 3 test groups and stored in coffee (Nescafe Classic, Turkey) (G2, G5), energy drink (Red Bull, Austria) (G3, G6), and in the distilled water as the control group (G1, G4), for 48 h. After 48 h, the specimens were washed with distilled water and dried. Second color measurements were made. ∆E00 values were calculated using the CIEDE 2000 color-difference formula. Results: Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Multiple comparisons were made with Bonferroni’s test. There was a statistically significant difference between 2 ceramics (p=0.035). Generally, Lava Ultimate showed more color change than Vita Enamic. Among the beverages, coffee was significantly different for both ceramics than control and energy drink (p<0.05). Conclusion: Lava Ultimate, showed more color change than Vita Enamic. Coffee has also been determined as the most colorant drink for both hybrid ceramics.

    The ınitiation of european annals of dental sciences

    On behalf of the Edito- rial Board, I am delighted to announce the publica- tion of the first issue of the European Annals of Dental Sciences. European Annals of Dental Sciences is the of- ficial scientific publica- tion of Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry. This journal was first introduced in 1972 under the name of "Ankara Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Dergisi / Journal of Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry". Since then, it had made significant scientific contributions to the field of dentistry. Now, almost after 50 years, we have renamed our publication European Annals of Dental Sciences in 2021 and changed the publication language to English to facilitate an effective world-wide transmission of new and innovative research and knowledge related to dentistry. Our Editorial Board now includes mentors with robust academic background from different dental specialties who surely will enhance our publication quality. This issue owes much to many people. Thanks are due first to Profes- sor Erhan Ozdiler, the former Editor-in-Chief, for his unfailing support. His commitment to research is inspiring. As incoming editors, we will try to keep his legacy alive. We, on behalf of the Editorial Board, dedicate our first issue to him. I would like to extend a big thank you to our Dean, Professor Kaan Orhan. It is a privilege to work with a leader like him. We are honored by the trust he placed in us and will do our best to increase the quality of the journal to the higher levels it deserves. We are also grateful to our Vice Dean, Associate Professor Mehmet Eray Kolsuz for his support. Most of all, my endless thanks are to my co-editors, Associate Professors Gülbike Demirel and Ismail Hakkı Baltacıoğlu, who have so generously dedicated their time and expertise to make this project happen.
