This article investigates the architectural and functional transformations of the Naltepesi structure, located within the ancient city of Arykanda, through three distinct construction phases. In the first phase, the building functioned as a public bath of the transverse-room type, featuring longitudinal elements. Significant modifications were introduced during the second phase. In this stage, the apodyterium was removed, and the north and east walls of the frigidarium were reinforced by external cladding with well-cut ashlar blocks. The doorways in the north wall of the frigidarium were blocked, thereby eliminating access from this direction. Instead, entry was rerouted through a monumental gate situated in the northwest. Upon entering through this gate into a corridor, a staircase of eight steps was located on the southern side, providing access to an upper storey. Although the upper floor has not survived, the presence of the staircase indicates that the building was two-storeyed during this phase. In the third and final phase, the structure was repurposed as a blacksmith’s workshop. While the building was initially interpreted as a typical Roman bath, several features—its architectural layout, external façade, two-storey design, and the discovery of sculptural fragments associated with Hygieia, Hypnos, and Telesphoros—distinguish it from other bathing complexes in the region. This provides evidence that it may have been a health house run by a physician or physicians affiliated with Asclepios during its second phase of construction. The building, which began operating in the early 4th century AD during its second phase, was closed or destroyed in the late 4th century AD due to the growing power of Christianity, which saw Asclepios's existence as a threat. It was later converted into a blacksmith's workshop. However, a fire in the third quarter of the 5th century AD brought the site to an end.

In Ancient Rome, the education of slaves functioned as a multifaceted institution that extended beyond the mere acquisition of individual skills to play a crucial role in maintaining social order, stabilizing economic production relations, and reconstructing dominant ideological frameworks. The availability and scope of educational opportunities for slaves varied significantly depending on their assigned roles, their masters’ social status, and prevailing pedagogical practices within Roman society. Slaves serving in domestic settings, bureaucratic positions, or aristocratic households often received training in grammar, rhetoric, literature, and accounting. This specialized knowledge enabled them to occupy skilled roles such as pedagogues, clerks, or secretaries. Conversely, slaves employed in physically demanding sectors such as agriculture, mining, or construction typically underwent experiential learning processes rather than formal education.

Basıs Für Eıne Statue Des Pompeıus In Mılet
The well-known base in the Museum of Miletus with the dedication to Pompeius Magnus is dated to 63 BC by the title “autokratora triton”. The previously unnoticed indentations on the surface are extremely striking and numerous. In addition to the statue itself, several objects were obviously attached to the base. As the recess for the right foot is recognizable, but not that for the left foot, the latter must have been raised. The posture of the statue apparently corresponded to that of Cassinum or Ostia (Poplicola). Coins of the naval commander Sextus Pompeius, who called himself son of Neptune, apparently depict a statue of his father as Neptune, as E. La Rocca has plausibly explained. According to other sources, Pompeius Magnus has been celebrated as Neptune in Rome and did erect corresponding statues. According to an evaluation of all of the base's inserts, the statue of Pompey could have been made in the style of Poseidon Vatican, with breastplate at the side, ship's prow and other attributes. Examination of the underside of the base revealed that it was originally made for another, smaller bronze statue and that it was later turned over and reused for the statue of Pompey, a common practice in antiquity.

On Herodotus 5.121: Where Dıd The Karıans Defeat The Persıans In 497/6 Bce, At Lelegıan Pedasa/Gökçeler, At Her Colony Pıdasa-Ongrıon, Or At Karıan Pıdasos/Pıdason Near Stratonıkeıa? And Where Does The ‘Karıan Hıghway’ Run?
(Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi, 2025) Herda, Alexander
According to Herodotos (5.117‒121), in 497/6 BCE in the beginning of the Ionian Revolt, the freedom-loving Karians fought the invading Persian army three times. After two devastating defeats in open battles in the northern Marsyas/Çine Çayı valley, a third nighttime ambush was victorious and resulted in the total annihilation of the Persians, leading to a stalemate which lasted until 494 BCE. The place of this battle is contested to date. As argued here, it is neither on the road at Lelegian Pedasa/Gökçeler near Halikarnassos, nor at her colony Pidasa-on-Grion near today’s Danişment, but at Karian Pedasos/Pedason on the ‘Karian Highway’ north of Atriya-Idrias-Stratonikeia. The site is once mentioned by Strabo (13.1.59 [C611]) as a ‘very little city’ (polychnion). It is likely to be identified with today’s Börükçü, where rescue excavations in an open lignite mining area have revealed a small settlement dating from Geometric until the early Byzantine Period (8th century BCE‒ 7th century CE). In the course of this article, the historical topography of central Karia since the Late Bronze Age is critically reviewed by reconstructing the main north-south running ‘Karian Highway’ with the help of Hittite and later ancient Greek texts and the archaeological evidence.

In this article, weaving associated finds from the ancient city of Teos are analyzed in terms of form, weight, material and density. After a brief touch on ancient weaving techniques, Production methods, tools and raw materials are examined from broad scope of Ionian region to Teos. In addition to finds directly relating to weaving, such as loom weights, epigraphic data (inscriptions) and weaving relevant archaeological descriptions found in the city were utilized. These data points to various uses of textiles in rituals as offerings or in the daily lives of the inhabitants of the city. Loom weights constitute the majority of the archaeological finds from the city. This provides information about the type of weaving, the yarn used and the loom. Weaving aids such as spindle whorls and needles were found in very small quantities. The scarcity of finds makes it difficult to obtain information about the methods used in spinning the yarn and the various stages such as sewing and decoration after the fabric is produced. Loom weights are very various and rich in terms of gram and form. The form and characteristics of the weights suggest the wide usage of warp-weighted looms in the city.
