For the spatial distribution of precipitation in Turkey, the equation called "Schreiber's Formula" is frequently used in the literature. This equation states that precipitation will increase in parallel with the increase in altitude and neglects the opposite. There are very few studies that test the accuracy and applicability of the equation. While this study is seeking answers to questions such as whether precipitation increases with altitude and if it increases or decreases what is the measure of it, also questioned the applicability of the equation attributed to Schreiber. The relationship between precipitation and elevation has been studied in four sections. In the first, the effects of altitude as well as latitude and distance to the sea parameters on precipitation were examined by multiple regression. For the other three sections, analyzes were performed by creating station pairs. The station pair approach assumes that the difference in precipitation amounts measured at two stations with close bird flight distances but different altitudes within the same sub-basin is a function of altitude. In the first part of the study with station pairs, monthly precipitation gradients of the pairs were calculated. Gradient values give the amount of change with the elevation in precipitation. In addition, calculations were made about how many of the monthly precipitation gradients in the pair were positive and negative, and it was thus possible to determine which gradient was more common in which month in the pair. In the other two parts evaluated with station pairs, the effects of station precipitation first, and then the dew point temperatures calculated at the stations, on the precipitation gradients calculated in these pairs are handled by regression analysis. All the analyzes performed showed that the precipitation gradient has a strong temporal and spatial variability. Multiple regression results also confirmed this. Station pairs and calculated precipitation gradients have been found to be a useful tool in representing this variability. In particular, the variation in the frequency of positive and negative gradients by months indicates a process that is compatible with the lower troposphere conditions that change from month to month.tr_TR
