dc.description.abstract | In this study, we attempted to examine the conception of God in the philosophy of Abu? al-Baraka?t al-Baghda?di? (d. 547/1152), one of the important scholars in Islamic philosophy, and determine the place of his opinions on the subject in the history of Islamic thought. The Qur?a?n, as a divine discourse, mentions both the existence and the attributes of God, which it calls for believing, even though it is not systematical and detailed. While Muslim theologians systematized the religious passages on God?s existence and attributes with the contribution of Greek Philosophy, Muslim philosophers developed a philosophical system giving priority to the philosophical texts that they had obtained through translations. There has been a certain coolness throughout history of Islamic thought so far between Islamic theology, which aimed at explaining Islamic believes rationally and defending them against incongruous views, and Islamic philosophy, whose sources were substantially Greek philosophical literature. Because of the problem centres especially on the understanding of God, we have chosen as a doctoral dissertation the topic on the proofs of God?s existence and His attributes in Abu? al-Baraka?t al-Baghda?di?. Hence, we have attained an opportunity to see the approaches and consequences of both disciplines by way of Abu? al-Baraka?t al-Baghda?di? who has proximity to both of them.As a result, we have found that Abu? al-Baraka?t was closer to the Ash'arite scholars than the Muslim Peripatetic philosophers at several crucial subjects in terms of conception of God in the Qur?a?n, and that he played an eclectic but conciliatory role in resolving this deeply-rooted controversy. Keywords: God, Arguments for the Existence of God, Divine Attributes, Greek Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Kala?m. | tr_TR |
