The Relation Between Physical Activity Habits, the Health-Promoting Lifestyles and Academic Achievements of Physical Education and Sports StudentsExisting information shows that activities of physical education, health-promoting lifestyle behaviors and physical activities contribute to academic achievement. Results obtained through cross-sectional studies demonstrate in particular that there is a positive relationship between physical activities in children and academic performance. However, it is not very clear what the relationship is between the physical activities, health-promoting lifestyle behaviors and academic achievements of the students of the Physical Education and Sports, which apart from sports education, also entails health, nutrition, psychology, sociology and related courses. The purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between health-promoting lifestyle behaviors, physical activities and academic achievements of the students studying at the School of Physical Education and Sports of Ankara University and to explain the influencing factors. The research was conducted with the participation of 91 students aged 18-25 of the total 345 students studying during the 2011-2012 academic year at the Ankara University Physical Education and Sports School (BESYO). The participants were selected from among those who volunteered for the study. The physical activity habits and health-promoting lifestyle behaviors of the students were measured with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, (long form) whose viability and reliability has been proven, along with the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Questionnaire, while their academic achievements were determined through obtaining the student?s grade scores averages from the Ankara University Student Information System (SIS). Academic achievement was analyzed from the aspects of departments, active and very active students, places of living, those working and not working in any kind of job, sportsmen with and without licenses, persons with and without a disease, and those with an illness taking and not taking medication.Fifty one (56%) of the students participating in the study were evaluated as active, while 39 (42.9%) were assessed as very active. No meaningful relationship between the total Physical Activity and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors point and the Academic Achievement obtained through their grade scores average was determined. A significant difference was also not found between departments, active and very active students, places of living, those working and not working in any kind of job, sportsmen with and without licenses, persons with and without a disease, and those with an illness taking and not taking medication. From the aspect of physical activity values, significant differences were discovered between students living with their families and those living in dorms and also between students living in lodging houses and those living in dorms. It was determined that students living in lodging houses had higher values of physical activities, while the students living in dorms had lower values (P < 0.05).There was also no significant relationship between the total health-promoting lifestyle behaviors scores and grade scores averages. A significant negative relationship (r= -0,23) was found between exercise, which is a subscale of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors and grade scores average. Significant differences were seen between the total health-promoting lifestyle behaviors scores and students of the departments of Physical Education and Sports, and Sports Management (P < 0.05). It was observed that students of the department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching had gained high points. Significant differences were also found in self-actualization, nutrition, interpersonal relations, stress management, health responsibility and exercise points between departments (P < 0.05 ).In conclusion, it could be said that students of the School of Physical Education and Sports have a high level of physical activity, there is no relationship between physical activity levels and academic achievement, that the subscale scores of healthy lifestyle behaviors change according to their place of living, department they study at and whether or not they are licensed sportsmen, and that students of the department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching, who have entered the School with higher scores, possess much higher sub scores of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors compared to students from other departments.Key Words: Academic Achievement, Health-Promoting Lifestyle Behaviors, Physical Activity, Physical Education and Sports.
