Participants were asked to answer a battery of questionnaire including Demographic Information Form, Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran – My Memories of Upbringing, Defense Style Questionnaire-40 and Splitting Scale. Results revealed that grandiose narcissism scores differed by gender and age groups, whereas vulnerable narcissism scores only differed by age groups. In regression analyses parental rejection, maternal emotional warmth, immature defense style, splitting defense mechanism and neurotic defense style demonstrated significant effect on grandiose narcissism; and vulnerable narcissism scores were predicted by parental rejection, maternal overprotection, splitting defense mechanism and all of the defense styles assesed. Moreover splitting defense mechanism and immatur defense styles either fully or partially mediate the relationships between perceived parental rearing styles and narcissism subtypes. The findings were discussed within the relevant literature. Keywords: grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, defense styles, perceived parental rearing styles, splitting defense mechanism
