Afrika kökenli Türkler'in eğitim deneyimleri
Özet
The aim of this study is to examine the educational experiences of African Turks by investigating the role of education on their social life. This study is designed as a qualitative research, using phenomenological method. To collect data for the study, in-dept interviews were conducted. Participants consist of 20 people from different ages and economic bachgrounds, who live in Western Turkey, mostly in İzmir. In the study nicknames were used instead of the real names of the participants. The results of the study suggest that the educational attainments of Afrikan Turks are quite low. There are not many individuals who have the opprtunity to continue their education after the compulsory schooling periods determined by the state. Inequality of educational opportunities play an important role in low educational attainments and educational gap. African Turks cannot achieve equal educational opprtunities because of two main reasons. First reason is the socio-economic and socio-cultural backgrounds of the families. The second reason is that this community faces racial discrimination in all public spaces especially in educational areas. Due to mentioned causes, there are many African Turks who drop schools and don't continue their education towards upper levels.
