In general, this thesis analyses the elements of Realism and Naturalism while illustrating the similarities and differences between these two literary movements. Naturalism which is not a reaction towards Realism took this literary movement one step further and added a new dimension to the subjects that had not been tackled in literature till then. By means of this literary movement, upleasant sides of life and livig conditions of the proletariat are represented thoroughly.The development of Naturalism in Spain is examined through presenting the opinions and views of various writers and critics. Being a woman writer of Spanish Literature, Emilia Pardo Bazan is a prolific writer who tried her hand at different literary types. Bazán is also one of the precursors of Naturalism in Spanish Literature. In this study, her approach to Naturalism and how she differs from Emile Zola, one of the most important writers of this particular movement, are studied.Emilia Pardo Bazán's book entitled Los Pazos de Ulloa in which the author employs the elements of Naturalism such as inheritence, environment, nature, physical and moral corruption, observation, documentation and scientific knowledge is analysed thoroughly. Los Pazos de Ulloa is of high importance in that it serves as a model for the development of Naturalism in Spain.
