This research aims to explore the patronizing values embedded in social sciencecourse books that are taught at the primary level of Turkish Educational System beforeand after the implementation of compulsory education law.Survey research model was employed as a research method. There are five majordata sources. The first one is the social science course books taught at the primaryeducation; the second, social science teachers; the third, course book investigationspecialists working for the Ministry of National Education, Board of Talim and Terbiye;the fourth, authors of social science course books for the primary education; and thefifth, literature review.The year 1997, in which compulsory education law has been put into practicewas set as a reference point for the analysis. In this sense, social science course books(Turkish, Social Knowledge, Citizenship and Human Rights Education, History ofRevolution and Ataturk?s Principles, Knowledge of Religion Culture and Ethics) thatwere taught at fifth and eighth grade both between the years 1994 and 1996, before thecompulsory education law, and the years 2001 and 2003, after the compulsoryeducation law are chosen as a course book sample of this research. In these periods, 14course books were determined and accessed.It was assumed that there are approximately ten thousand social science teachersworking in the central districts of Ankara at the primary education level. Departing fromthis assumption, although it was estimated that 384 people would be representative ofthis population, 396 social science teachers were accessed.41 people working for the Board of Talim and Terbiye as a course bookinvestigation specialist constituted the specialist population of this research whereas 9authors of social science course books who volunteered to participate in this researchwere accessed for author population.Data gathered through questionnaires, interviews, and content analyses areexplored and evaluated independent from each other.Keywords: Protection, Protective Values, Lesson Books, Content analysis,tradition, traditional society.
