ABSTRACTA STUDY ON LEARNING STYLE PREFERENCES OF SECONDARY SCHOOLSTUDENTS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGEAKSOY, MineM.A.ThesisForeign Language TeachingThesis Supervisor: Doç.Dr.Gülsev PAKKANMay, 2006, 100 pagesThis study investigates the learning styles of secondary school learners inforeign language teaching and if gender variable effects the learning stylepreferences or not.The students, who continued the ninth, tenth and eleventh grade in 2005-2006academic years in Aydınlıkevler Anatolian Communication High School,participated in this study by filling the learning style questionnaire. The research iscomposed of 152 students.Descriptive method was used in this study, and in order to determine thestudents? learning style, a questionnaire that Felder and Silverman created wastranslated into Turkish. The learner questionnaire including 44 questions aboutlearning style preferences.The data obtained by the help of the questionnaire were analyzed via theStatically Analysis Program (SPSS) on computer. The results obtained from theanalysis have been interpreted by using tables.The differences between the dimensions and gender was found statisticallysignificant. It has been found female students preferred Visual-Verbal learning stylesin Input dimension mostly.In this study, generally, it has been seen that the learners prefer Visuallearning style the most. Both female and male students preferred Visual LearningStyle when the learning styles are examined seperately in each dimension.This study emphasized that it was necessary to benefit from the learningstyles during the foreign language teaching process.Key Words: Learning Styles, Active Learner, Reflective Learner, Intuitive Learner,Sensing Learner, Visual Learner, Verbal Learner, Sequential Learner, GlobalLearner, Foreign Language Teaching.
