Özet
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between perceived parental acceptance-rejection and self concept and automatic thoughts among children who have difficulty learning in a typical manner and at risk to develop the disorder, but are not officially diagnosed with a learning disability yet. The sample of the study was consisted of children who are between the age of 10-13 (N = 355; 209 female, 146 male). Several inventories including Parental Acceptance-Rejection/Control Questionnaire (PARQ/C): Mother, Parental Acceptance-Rejection/Control Questionnaire (PARQ/C): Father, Cognitive Triad Inventory for Children (CTI-C), and Piers – Harris Children's Self- Concept Scale were used to obtain information from children. In addition, Learning Disability Symptom Checklist were filled out by both mothers and fathers as well as teachers. A two-way MANOVA was used to test the research hypotheses, and it was found that children in the risk group reported perceiving more rejection, coldness, hostility, neglect, and undifferentiated rejection from both their mothers and fathers in comparison to children in the control group. Similarly, the results showed that children in the risk group had more negative self-concept and more negative automatic thoughts than children in the control group. In addition, the total score of both father and mother on PARQ/C predicted the self concept scores of children in both groups; and in this association, automatic thoughts were found to play a mediator role. Taken together, the results of this study could be used as a reference/guide to explain the effect of parent-child relationship on the child's cognitions and perceived self-concept.
