Özet
This thesis aims to analyze the impact of so-called new urban poverty processeson the poor households and identifies the survival strategies developed by thesehousehold by using the data gathered in a field research in one of the povertyconcentrated neighborhood in Diyarbakır.Departing from the definition of and descriptions about poverty as well as usingthe theoretical debates on urban poverty, the study identifies changing labourmarket relations and the rolling back of the welfare state under the neo-liberalstrategies as the main reasons behind the so-called new urban poverty. However, it is clear that different societies and cities experience different formsof poverty. Even if almost all localities under globalizing capitalism experiencesimilar forms of poverty with different rate and intensity, poverty experiencedin certain localities are contributed by other factors leading to a morecondensed form of poverty.Diyarbakır experience constitutes a good example in terms of above mentionedsimilarities and differences in the experience of poverty. One of the peculiaraspects of poverty experienced in Diyarbakır is that forced migration hascontributed immensely to the worsening of the poverty in the city. The casestudy is built upon the findings of the research carried out in an area whereconsiderable part of the inhabitants came to the city as a result of forcedmigration and identifies on the one hand the mechanisms and processes ofimpoverishment and on the other hand the survival strategies developed by thepoor population in the face of severe poverty.
