Ayşe nal, November 2006, 104 p.This study aims at to investigate how the suicide bomb attacks whichoccured in stanbul in 2003 presented in Turkish daily press. The first assumption of the study is that terorism is presented in the newsmedia in terms of violence and victim-centered approach. It is secondassumption defended in this study is that the reproduction of the `officialdiscourse? which comprise of the government?s call to unity, causes theideological closure. In this frame four major Turkish dailies which have different politicaland ideological leanings are selected and a qualitative content analysis isconducted on the news texts. The chosen newspapers are HÜRR YET(popular), ZAMAN (pro-islamist), TÜRK YE (conservative and mildnationalist) and CUMHUR YET (left).Despite differences between the newspapers, it is observed that all thenewspapers are represented the terrorism in terms of victim-oriented approach. The second result is that reproduction of the ?official discourse? resulted in theideological closure, so that basic reasons of the attacks are ignored. Finally it isobserved that the ideological and political differences amongst the dailies affectthe content of the news texts.
