Ulusal kimliği tiyatro ile kurmak: Türk tiyatrosunun kimlik inşasındaki işlevi
Özet
The founding years of the Republic of Turkey, are at the same time the era when the national identity is being tried to be established. The aim is to eliminate the heritage of the Ottoman Empire which contains many identities and in lieu of it create the Turkish national identity. The ideology of the Republic, from the beginning of its establishment, uses the culture and arts as a tool for this purpose. The culture and art policies are based on instituting the modernization project on the Kemalist Ideology and the values of the Republic. The theatrical texts written during this era are also instrumentalized in compliance with the mentioned objectives of the founding staff. The plays are formed as the messengers of the ideas and values which are aimed to be established in the society by the Republic. Accordingly, the characters in these plays are formed as hangers in charge of transmitting the message aimed to be given, from the stage to the audience. They do not have any individual stories or choices. They represent the values of the nation, not themselves. In this respect, they unavoidably become texts that are open to be read with allegory.Ziya Gökalp?s inception of ideology has a significant place in the establishment of the Turkish national identity. Gökalp?s conception has influenced the founding ideology as well as the theatrical texts. The impact of Gökalp?s conception can also be easily observed in the formation of the play characters. On the other hand the traces of; the connection which the Republic has never been able to cut with the nationalism and the fact that the Turkish modernization exists on the tension between the nationalism and modernism, can as well be tracked in the plays and the characters.
