Working life is one of the most important negotiation topics in Turkey?sfull membership process with EU which is an economic association basicly.Recruitment as the first stage of working life and equal opportunities for eachcandidate in recruitment process should be discussed both in organizationallyand also in socially. In this study, statements which prevent equal oppurtunityand lead into discrimination in job advertisements which are published in oneof the Turkish and one of the English newpaper supplements are searched.In working life discrimination may be defined as selection of thecandidates for a job according to the criterias which are not related to the job.Discrimination might arise from personal and social biases. It may causeinequality on the scale of organization and also society. It maybe said thatnewspapers which publish these job advertisements are places thatnormalize and generalize the discriminatory statements. In this study legalframeworks and current situations of UK and Turkey in discrimination andequal opportunity are compared. It is found that there are direct discriminationstatements like age, gender and university preferences in job advertisementsin Turkey. Also indirect discrimination rate that is caused by indefinitespecifications like job description, name of the employer and selection criteriasis higher in the adversitements that are published in Turkish newpaper thanthose of English newspaper.Key words: Working life, discrimination, equal opportunity, job advertisement
