Saftal-Dîn Abd al-Mu'min al-Urmavî and al-Risâla al- Sharafivya (The Sharafian Treatise on Musical Proportions) Doktorate Thesis, Advisor, Assist Professor, Bayram Akdoğan, VI-357p. Safi al-Din 's life, his works and his well-known book al-Risâla al-Sharafiyya which was written about theory of music were discussed in this thesis. The eleven manuscripts of al-Risâla al-Sharafiyya were described Four of them were selected and its edition critique was done and translated into Turkish. Al-Risâla al-Sharafiyya is a well-known book which explains seventeen-note octave gamut Safi al-Din refers to ancient Greek philosophers and later authors as al-Kindus, al-Farabius, andAvicenna. Al-Risala al-Sharafiyya is divided into five discourses including acoustic-the theory of sound- intervalic ratios, establishment of intervals and their proportions, and names, consonances-disconances, addition and subtraction of intervals and constituting the genres, disposition of the genres within the range of one and two octaves, accord systems of string instruments and ud, classifications of the modes, modulation, composition andrhytmic analysis.
