Abstract
The aim of the present study is to identify a number of variables which predicts ADHD. For this aim a model was tested in which emotion regulation, parental attitude, child?s gender and maternal childhood ADHD symptoms were the primary variables. Another aim is to investigate maternal knowledge of ADHD.The research group consisted of 87 children between the ages of 7 years and 13 years who had received an ADHD diagnosis. They were recruited from Child Psychiatry outpatient department of Ministry of Health Ankara Diskapi Children's Hospital. A total of 84 children in the same age group, who have applied to the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same hospital with no known diagnosis of ADHD, was included as a comparative group in the study. Both of the groups were recruited by consecutive sampling. The following instruments were utilized in the study: Conners Parent Rating Scale- Revised, Emotion Regulation Checklist, Wender Utah Rating Scale, Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity (ADHD) Knowledge and Attitudes Questionnaire Form and Personal Information Form. In order to explain the relationship among emotion regulation, maternal ADHD symptoms and parental attitudes on the children with ADHD, the Structural Equation Model based on path-analysis technique has been used. Descriptive and chi-square (?2) test statistics were also calculated in exploring the maternal knowledge on ADHD.Primary findings of the research were as follows: (1) The children with ADHD had lower level of emotion regulation than the children without ADHD, (2) The mothers of children with ADHD showed negative parental attitudes and (3) The mothers of children with ADHD have exhibited mere childhood ADHD symptoms compared to the mothers of children without ADHD. In addition, it was found that maternal diagnosis of childhood ADHD symptoms was directly related to negative parental attitudes and the child?s emotion regulation but indirectly related to the child's ADHD diagnosis. The effects of parental attitudes on children?s emotion regulation were not different across gender. A significant relationship was found between gender differences in both of the diagnosis of ADHD and the level of emotion regulation. In relation to the second aim, it was found that the maternal knowledge level on ADHD was generally low and there was no significant difference between the two groups of mothers. The findings pointed out the importance of maternal ADHD symptoms, parental attitudes and emotion regulation on the children with ADHD. The findings were discussed in relation to recent study findings.Key Words: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, Child, Emotion Regulation, Parental Attitudes, Knowledge.
