Abstract
Edremit is an administrtive District of Balıkesir which is situated in the North- Ege Region of the West Anatolia. Edremit District, is surrounded by the Ayvacık District from the W, the Bayramiç and the Yenice Districts from the N, the Havran District from the E and the Burhaniye District from the S. The research area, consist of the main morfological units lay from the NE to the SW. These are Kaz Mountain on the North, the Edremit tectonic based plain on the middle and the lengthens of the Madra Mountain on the South. The heights of the research area are variable and increase from the sea level on the South to 1 774 meters on the North. İn the researh area, average temperature is °C 16.2 and average precipitation is 714.2 milimeters. İn the Edremit plain and its surroundings the vegetation is vary and mainly consist of the Mediterranean varieties. The researh area, covers 22 villages, 3 towns (Akçay Town, Altınoluk Town, Zeytinli Town) and one city (Edremit) with the total population of 63.430 in 1990. İn respect of the cultural, social and physical structure Edremit showns a city character with a population of nearly 45.000 in 1997. Economic activities in the city of Edremit and its towns an surrounding villages are various. The research area is an important agriculture and tourism district in the Ege Region. 297İn relating to the progress has shown by the industrial companies an the tourism activities, in the recent years, the commercial activities has also improved in the Edremit District. İn the Edremit District, many historical remains were found dated to the Classical Age. A long with the other antique remains from the Seljuk and Ottoman period in the Edremit city and the Altınoluk town. Climatic conditions are extermly suitable for tourism in particular for the mountainering, sightseeing and for the sea side holiday makers. Today, Edremit and its surroundings are very attractive touristic place for the domestic and the foreign holiday makers. 298
