Abstract

This study aims to compare selected green belt studies with ongoing studies in Ankara and to develop conceptual framework and proposals for Ankara Green Belt System. The aim, role and development of green belts are investigated by analysing the example studies. There is no conceptual framework seems to provide for either urban open / green space or green belt applications in Ankara. The existing green belt afforestration scheme does not quite fit into the definition of "green belts'" or "green ways" in their isolated and disconnected designation. Green belt is an open space planning instrument. As a series of open spaces, green belt provides a transition from urban spaces to rural areas. In this manner, green belts make a contribution to canalize the urban development. In this study with this approach, a conceptual framework and a scenario for Ankara Green Belt System are proposed.
