Abstract
298 SUMMARY In this study, the admission competencies of students to higher education sought and observed by academic staff were outlined and their views on access to higher education were tried to determine. The survey approach model was used in this study. The working group was comprised of the academic staff of Physics, Chemistry and Biology departments in University of Ankara and University of Gazi, and also Chemistry and Biology departments of Hacettepe University. Two different data collection instruments were devised to collect the data of the study. The first one aimed to get the views of academic staff on the importance of the admission competencies sought at higher education and the determination of the level of having these competencies by majority of higher education students. The other one head a goal of obtaining the views of academic staff on access to higher education. The data obtained with two different instruments were classified under the following headlines: 1. The admission competencies of students to higher education sought and observed by academic staff, 2. The views of academic staff on access to higher education The interpretation of the results were listed as follows: The academic staff marked the following competencies for admission to higher education as very important and important. However, they found the level of students having these competencies to be inadequate.299 Language skills, knowledge of subject fields, different abilities, thinking skills, study skills, research skills, organization skills, personal characteristics, different interests, attitude toward natural environment and physical activities. The views of the academic staff on access to higher education may be summarised as follows: Duration of the compulsory education should be eight years, the demand to higher education should be decreased, graduates of Science High School, Anadolu High School and General High School should have the application right to their departments, placement should be done according to the results of the examinations and the type of graduated high school, the questions of the examinations should be on the subjects of mathematical and verbal ability, physics, chemistry, Turkish and biology, type of the questions should be multiple choice and the examinations must be organized by ÖSYM (Center of Student Selection and Placement). Moreover, the academic staff found the level of educational system in preparing students for higher education to be inadequate. They suggested that the qualities of teachers should be improved to increase the qualities of students.
