Doğan, Z. Duygu, The importance of journalists right to protect their sources in Terms of the Freedom of the Press in Line with Their Duty to Provide Accurate News and Information, Master Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Oya TOKGÖZ, 166 p.In this thesis, journalists? right to protect their sources in line with their duty to provide accurate news and information is discussed within the scope of the law and ethical norms in terms of its importance in the freedom of press. In this context, the practical and legal obstacles as well as legal and ethical boundaries in the way of this legally and ethically regulated right have been identified by emphasizing that this right of journalists to protect their sources is crucial to the revelation of the truth and a free press. It must be remembered that freedoms granted on paper does not mean these freedoms actually exist. Seeing the reflections of these freedoms granted in practice is what matters. The protection of journalists? sources is a prerequisite for the freedom of press as stated in the professional principals of the press in many countries and as agreed upon in various international documents. Forcing journalists to reveal their sources will undermine the vital functions of the press, adversely affect the capability of the press to provide accurate and reliable information, impede the public?s right to be informed, and in effect, damage the freedom of the press. In societies where journalists? duty to provide correct information and news is restricted and the public?s right to be informed is violated, one can not say that there is freedom of expression and a functional democracy.
