Birleşmiş Milletler'in kalkınma faaliyetleri ve Türkiye'ye yansımaları
Özet
The main aim of this thesis is to examine why the United Nations (UN), created basically to provide international peace and security, deals also with the development problem; which activities, how and through which institutions are carried out by the UN for development; and what is the contribution of the UN Development Programme to Turkey?s development. The thesis points out that the development problem has turned into a multidimensional issue that includes not only economic but also political, social and cultural issues. Its acquisition of an international dimension and the increase of its correlation with the world peace have required international cooperation to fight against the problem at the global level and this situation has led international organizations, like the UN, to more concentrate on the problem.Bearing in mind that it is not possible to provide a lasting international peace without providing the economic and social well-being of all the people in the world, the UN has given more importance to development activities than to classical peace-keeping approaches. The UN System, advocating most of its resources to development, acts as the center for global efforts for solving issues that challenge humanity, including improving human rights, protecting environment, fighting against illnesses and diminishing poverty. In Turkey, the UN, particularly its Development Programme (UNDP), makes important contributions to Turkey?s efforts for development, reaching the Millennium Development Goals and preparation for the EU membership. It is asserted that the UNDP has contributed to important development results in Turkey, by carrying out projects that concentrate particularly on diminishing poverty and regional disparities in an equitable and participative approach and by playing a catalyzer role in the establishment of modern concepts and approaches in the country.
