Analysis of the narrations of hadith from the perspective of the significance of historic knowledge, the case of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza, Doctora?s Thesis, Advisor: Assoc.Prof.Dr.Mehmet Emin Özafşar, 303 p.This study on the ?analysis of the narrations of hadith from the perspective of the significance of historic knowledge, the case of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza? covers the first period hadith-history relations and aims to present whether hadith studies have nourished history with sources or is it history that have sourced hadith studies. It has been analyzed how hadith and historical works have received and evaluated narratives, alongwith the possibilities of attaining historical information through hadith sources. There is an introduction and three main chapters. The importance and purpose of the study as well as the methods and references used throughout the study are described in the introduction. In the first chapter, an outline about the chain of narration is studied together with concepts like report (haber), work (eser), story (kıssa), narrative (hikaye). The characteristic qualities of narratives of jahilliya and Islam periods are discussed and disciplines of hadith and history are investigated with respect to their usage of narratives. A comparative work on the similarities and differences between two disciplines are laid down.In the second chapter, the sources of the early period narrations and the narrators in both of the disciplines are discussed. Narrators like Abân b. Uthman (96/714 or 105/723), Urwa b. Zubayr al-Asadî ay-Kurashî al-Madanî (91/709 or 95/713), Ibn Shihâb az-Zührî (124/741), Mûsâ b. Ukba (141/758), Muhammed b. Ishâk (151/768) are concisely studied with their approach to narration and history, their works, sources, methods, and influences.First period literature of hadith and history have been studied with respect to their content and style of expounding on the topic.A comparative content analysis has been made in the third chapter on a sample topic (The case of Banu Qurayza) from hadith and history books dealing with narration and narrators. It has been found out that these two disciplines share the same sources but have different principles in evaluating narrations. Hadith books have been deduced to be more reliable with respect to information value of narrations
