This study consists of a preface, a monography of Imam al-Haramayn, a review of the book al-Giyasi, an introduction, two main chapters, conclusion and a bibliography. In the preface, the purpose of doing work on this subject and the method of research that is followed are dealt with. The Bay'ah and Imamah are studied from historical perspective, starting with the beginning of Islam, until the time that these practices are ended among muslims. In the first of the two main chapters which is entitled as Imamah, the dictionary and technical meaning of the word Imamah, its importance in Islam, the occurance of it in the Qur'an + the Sunna are dealt with. I addition, its validity which is established by the Qur'an and Concensus of the Community. The requirements for election of the Imam, the principle of the electoral college (ahi' al-hâl wa'l-agd) the number required for it are studied. The principle reğuirements to be Imam the porcedures that terminate the imamete of a person are the subject of our concern. In the same chapter, the principles and conditions of appointment of a heir apparent, and the appointment of the governors and the responsibilitis of those governors concerning religion as well as worldly affairs are the subjects of our inquiry in the same chapter. The view points of the scholars who were the followers of different sects are also dealt with. Accordingly, great mojority of muslis scholars, including Imam al-Haramayn hold that "Electing and Imam is a religions obligation". The subject matter of the second major chapter is Bay'ah, the definition of Bay'ah is given, its kinds are stated and the circumstances that it is going to be169 valid are point out Moreover, the principle of the mutual consultation (Shura) is briefly stated. The conclusion that we reached in this chapter, strenghtened and supported the principle: "It is a religion duty to have oath of allience to am Imam." In the concluding chapter the Islamic point of view on Imamah and Bay'ah are summerised in the forms of brief articles. A bibliography of the sources that were referred to is included at the end.
