Gemlik'in kuruluşu gelişmesi ve fonksiyon alanlarının dağılışı
Özet
Gemlik, the research area of this study, is located in the Southern Marmara part of the Marmara Region, which is the North West of our country. It was initially established by the Argonautians in 1390 B.C:, overlooking the plain formed with the sediments carried by the Karsak river. It is situated at the end of the bay bearing its' name. The convenient location in terms of transportation played an important role in the continual existence of Gemlik. Gemlik, named Kios in the ancient times, was famous its shipyards in the Roman and Byzantine periods. It was for this reason that the Ottomans changed its' name to "Gemilik", when they conquered it. Gemlik showed a rapid development during the Republic, and has become one of the major settlements providing services with its' agriculture and agriculture dependent industries and benefiting from the availability of transportation. In 1990 Gemlik has a population of 50.237; where 36% of this population is working in the agriculture sector. Olives are the most important agricultural product of Gemlik. The retail and wholesale of olives is the major income of the local people. Due to convenient transportation, industry is generally located in the Southern part of the Gemlik Bay. However, the effluents from the industry led to the pollution of the Bay and affected fisheries and tourism negatively. To protect the beatuies and properties Gemlik has; and to decrease the present environmental problems, a number of measures have to be taken by the public and the Government and the necessary sensitivity and attention being given to the issure.
