Thesis CONSTITUTING URBAN OPEN AND GREEN AREA SYSTEM: MODEL OF KAYSERİ URBAN COMPLEX Banu ÖZTÜRK Ankara University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Landscape Architecture In urban environments especially green areas play an important part in forming good quality environments with their ecological, economical, physical, social and esthetic functions. Open and green area systems contribute the formation of urban communities by creating more livable environments. In this reseearch open and green areas have been searched in the frame of urban planning. New ideas on "open and green area system" have been developed. In the research firstly "system" concept has been exemined with literature review by placing a discussion on various ideas and opinions on open and green area system. An open and green area system is formed of three components as "space, time, sociality". Kayseri urban complex which is chosen as the case area of this research has been analyzed in the frame of natural (topography, geomorphology, soil etc.) and socio- cultural factors (historical development, population, connection etc.). According to the analysis Kayseri City has a tendency to unite with the semi-rural settelments surrounding it. Existing green areas and potential natural areas of Kayseri city and its vicinity have been threatened by the pressures of developments. With a system approach to open and green areas of Kayseri urban complex, open and green areas which are in city's vicinity should be protected with its natural and cultural values and should be considered in relation with the other urban open and green areas.
