Societies, differing in the aspect of mentality, culture, life style, has always unevitably and compulsory need an intercultural communication vehicle. Translation, in its challenge to find a proper and satisfactory answer to these needs, seems to be as old human activity as the world itself. Cicero, with his famous 'non verbum de verbo, sed sensum exprimere de sensu?, has actually started the discussion, lasting for centuries: discussion between loose and faithful translation methods. The names like Etienne Dolet, John Denham, Alexander Fraser Tytler had demonstrated the normative approach to the fenomen of translation, trying to put some certain rules and principles of `right? translating. Later, translation was estimated as an unique, multidimentional and complex activity; flexible discriptive theories took place of strict normative approaches. Noam Chomsky and Eugene Nida made their contribution to the translation studies with the `deep structures?, scientists like Itamar Even-Zohar and Gideon Toury worked on Polysystem and target-oriented translation methods. Orientation on target text found its final discription in the Skopos Theory by Hans Vermeer and Katharina Reiss. Translation, as the absolute condition of the intercultural dialog, continues to be an object for scientific studies.Long sentence with complex syntactic structure is one of the most important features of Orhan Pamuk?s novel `The Black Book?. By comparative analysis of 512 examples of source sentence-target sentence couples we found that approximately 61% of the examples has undergone certain structural changes in some way, mostly by being divided into a few shorter target sentenses. We also gave our version of target sentence where possible.
