AVRUPA B RL Ğ ?N N AKDEN Z POL T KASI VE TÜRK YEA.Murat S C MABSTRACTSince its establishment until today the European Union (EU) has paidutmost importance to the Mediterranean region and felt the necessity to implementa specific policy aimed at the area as it is an important region that effects thestability and security in the EU.In the beginning, the European Union established bilateral relations withMediterranean Countries based on agrements and later on felt the necessity todevelop policies aimed at the region.In that connection new approaches were developed such as the "GeneralMediterranean Policy", "Revised Mediterranean Policy" and the "EuroMediterranean Partnership". The Euro Mediterranean Partnership process which wasestablished by the "Euro Mediterranean Conference? held in Barcelona on 27-28November 1995 is still ongoing.It is not possible to say that the objectives of the policies of the EUtowards the Mediterranean countries is throughly met. This has several reasons.Despite the obstacles resulting from the present political environment before theEuro- Mediterranean Partnership the whole process is a valuable effort.On the other hand, Turkey is being effected from the policy of the EUtowards the Mediterranean region. However it is worthy to mention thatmembership process of Turkey is also developing outside the policy of the EUtowards the Mediterranean countries.
