Osmanlı payitahtında bir yabancı ressam Jean Baptiste Vanmour
Özet
Dutch painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour, who worked for many ambassadors in the Ottoman capital between 1699 and 1737, is a prominent name related to the reflection of İstanbul?s then topographical, ethnographical, economic and political aspects. This study, which aims to evaluate Vanmour?s works in İstanbul, is composed of five chapters. In the first chapter, the Ottoman-European relations, political, cultural and artistic developments during Vanmour?s stay and concepts and definitions like ?Tulip Era?, ?Orientalism? and ?Turquarie? are mentioned. The second chapter focuses on the artist?s life on and knowledge about the ambassadors he worked for. In the third chapter, a catalog is prepared composed of his paintings. In the fourth chapter, Vanmour?s artistic view and paintings were evaluated comparatively. In this chapter, paintings are analyzed in terms of subject and style and Vanmour?s way of expression during his thirty eight years-stay in İstanbul are discussed. In the fifth chapter, the interpretation of Vanmour?s paintings by different artists is examined in terms of the similarities and differences between the paintings.Determining the era?s western ?stereotypes? about the East in visual arts, music or literature will ease reading the works. From this point, Jean Baptiste Vanmour?s paintings are an important source in interpreting the diplomatic life at the Ottoman Palace, the Eastern community and traditions from a westerner?s point of view and form a sample for 18th century?s European stereotypes.
