Özet
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the private teaching institutions whichare product of certain historical and social conditions, within the context ofeducational equality based on the opinions of the students.Screening model was employed in this descriptive study. Work group of thisstudy consists of 11th grade high school students of the secondary education inÇankaya Town of Ankara Province during the academic year of 2008 - 2009. Sincenumbers of students are too much, we resorted to sampling from the students bytaking into consideration of the lack of time and financial difficulties. Starting fromhere, we decided to conduct the study on the students of 5 high schools in ÇankayaTown. By assuming each school as a separate cluster out of 5 schools, we sampledfrom each school separately. Surveying technique was employed in this study as aquantitative research technique, questionnaires administered to total 280 students ofwhich 159 is girls and 121 is boys. Results of the questionnaires consisting of 42questions, were analyzed by using SPPS 16.0 software package.According to results obtained from this study, the schools are separated bysocial classes and students go to schools based on their social classes' realities. While children of those parents who have occupations with higher social status andgood revenues, are being educated in distinguished public schools, children of thoseparents who have occupations with lower social status and lower pays, are going tothe public schools which are closest to their homes. Not interest the student has towards the classes nor resources and activitiesof the school neither in-class teaching methods, but socio-economic and culturalstatus and their self-respect are determinant in success of the students. All of the children of the parents who have higher revenues and who childrengo to relatively distinguished schools go to private teaching institutions. On the otherhand, in the schools which children of poor parents go to, rate of those students whogo to private teaching institutions is quite lower than other schools. Those familieswith money send their children to private teaching institutions and reinforce themthrough private tuition thereby preparing their children for central examinations better.Examination - private teaching institution relation serves to reinforce elitist education.Higher the revenues of the families, more to the extent they afford to bear thecosts of education. In the schools which children of higher revenue families go,duration of going to private teaching institutions is longer. While children of wealthyand higher social status families go to private teaching institutions more willingly, children of poorer families do not go enthusiastically. The students think that they will fail to win university exam and that theeducation provided in the schools are not sufficient in enabling them to win universityexam. Besides, according to the students private teaching institutions employmemorizing education and high level of success and pressure of competition in theprivate teaching institutions make the students uncomfortable.According to the students, since private teaching institutions are commercial, they increase inequality in the education. The students believe that the privateteaching institutions shall open the doors of university not only to those students withhigh academic success but also to those with low academic success.
